Silkie?

The old saying, “you learn something new everyday,” really is true, for today I learned about a band called Silkie. They are from the UK back in the 60s and did this amazing rendition of one of my favorite Beatles songs, You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away, which apparently made it to America before The Beatles version did! Take a listen below and let me know what you think!

I find it soothing I’m afraid

I am in love with the music of Kristian Matsson, who plays music under the name The Tallest Man on Earth. His songwriting feels very Dylan to me and that, when done right, is never a bad thing. Check out this song below then do some YouTube surfing to see some more intimate performances such as this one.

I sense a spy up in the chimney
From all the evidence I’ve burned
I guess he’ll read it in the smoke now
And soon to ashes I’ll return

There is really nothing bad to say about the band Fake Problems and I believe this song will put you in agreement with me.

I am made of mistakes
I don’t believe in fate
And I refuse to fail again
I will not let them win
I am much more than human
But just as insignificant

Sample

While we are on the subject of sampling I think it is a good time to share some other samples that I really enjoy. The best part of sampled music to me is hearing the original song in its entirety, it feels like a behind the scenes look at the production process. Check out a couple of my favorite original songs, followed by the song in which the sample was used.

Some sad news today, Donna Summer, the queen of soul, has passed away at the tender age of 63. Many of you may not be familiar with Summer, but samples of her music have made it into so many more popular songs. Check out one of my favorites by her below, and a track from one of my favorite albums below it.

The super rad people over at The Ruckus just posted this incredible video they filmed of one of my current obsessions, The Front Bottoms, playing an acoustic song on top of a castle in Southampton, England. The video should tell you plenty about how sick The Front Bottoms are, but if you need to know more you could head over to the post I wrote about them a few weeks back by clicking, HERE.

You’ve got the essence dear, if I could have a second skin I’d probably dress up in you.

They don’t make them like they used to, that is for sure. I can’t even remember how long ago I got a hold of this song but I was living on the West Coast so it was pre-2005 and I just rediscovered it while looking through my external hard drive of music. Check it out and lets hope one day we can get back here. Click below to listen to the song, or if you are feeling adventurous you could check out this YouTube video.

The Lovers that Went Wrong

Yet another song from this past weekend that really set the moment perfectly is this gorgeous track from the English band, Daughter. This song is titled Youth, and it is perfect. Enjoy.

And if you’re still breathing, you’re the lucky ones.
‘Cause most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs.
Setting fire to our insides for fun
Collecting names of the lovers that went wrong
The lovers that went wrong.

New Slang

I have been listening to The Shins for a very long time, but after a very trying weekend my love for them has been reignited. The early part of the weekend was difficult to say the least and its very hard to explain exactly how I was feeling, but things started to turn around early Sunday when I got to spend some quality time with two of my very best friends, who always have a way of brightening things up. We spent the day filming the final scenes of the music video that we have been working on for several weeks now, a video for the group Dubvision from Holland in which I was cast to play the main character. We filmed for nearly the entire day and wrapped shooting very late last night, with the final moment of the night taking place in the O Street Artists Lofts, the breeze coming in through open windows from a cool DC night, with New Slang by The Shins playing while we all just listened in silence. Sometimes the worst situations can turn into the most memorable times.

I’m looking in on the good life I might be doomed never to find.
Without a trust or flaming fields am I too dumb to refine?
